District heating supply in Mayen
The challenge
Up to the end of the 90s public and private buildings in Mayen were heated with conventional fuel such as heating oil and natural gas using decentralised plants. The big WEIG Karton paper factory was near the town with production processes that generated a great deal of thermal discharge. Moritz J. Weig GmbH & Co. KG, today's Iqony Energies as a district heating specialist, and the Mayen municipal public utilities company got together to use this discharge for heating purposes.
The aim
The aim was to supply the town’s district heating needs exclusively from this thermal discharge. This idea is exemplary in Rhineland-Palatinate, because energy hitherto unused for practical purposes is being used on a large scale. Harmful carbon dioxide emissions in Mayen are much reduced by it and the air quality in the region is simultaneously improved. Annual CO2 reduction is of the order of 5,400 tonnes.
The solution
Iqony Energies and the town of Mayen were awarded the Tandem Prize of the Land of Rhineland-Palatinate for exemplary public / private cooperation projects for their Mayen district heating project in September 2014 as part of the “Municipalities that support medium-sized companies” competition.
