    District heating in Werl

In Werl (North Rhine-Westphalia), city on the medieval Hellweg road, in the year 2000 we set up a district heating supply system whose connected load today is 15 megawatts. Initially, a mobile central energy plant provided the necessary heat; from 2003 on the Werl biomass-fired combined heat and power plant took over supply duty.

The plant burns around 10,000 metric tons of natural wood annually. It has an electric capacity of 0.5 megawatts and a thermal capacity of 3.3 megawatts. Two hot water boilers with 4.5 megawatts each complement the plant. Starting point for construction of the biomass-fired CHP plant was the conversion of a former military site in the north section of town. The combined heat and power plant is an integral part of the KonWerl energy park.
